He was a scribe of recruits organizing the labour and supplying the manpower for the king's projects. As an architect, he supervised the building of Luxor Temple, the mortuary temple of the pharaoh Amenhotep the 3rd at western Thebes and the temple of Soleb in Nubia. As a priest, he was an intermediary with the god Amun in Karnak temple. He was revered for his teachings as a philosopher and as a healer. Despite being a commoner he was highly respected by the time of his death that his funerary temple was built adjacent to that of the pharaoh. Several statues portray him as a young scribe and as an older man.
