It was used
as a burial place of sacred bulls of Apis . In ancient Egypt the bull was a
manifestation of The pharaoh as it was the symbol of great strength, fighting spirit & fertility of the king .
By the new kingdom 1380 BC , the remains of the sacred bulls were interred in
that cemetery.
It was
discovered by Mariette in 1850 AD. He found the heads of sphinxes sticking out
of the shifting Desret dunes , he cleared the sand and found the Serapeum. The
six sphinxes that led to the entrance Of the Serapeum are on display at the
Louvre Museum in Paris.
It contaimns 24 huge sarcophagi shaped from
single blocks hard stones like black ,
