The Enchanting Island of Philae In The City of Aswan , Egypt

It is the site of the splendid temple complex of the goddess Isis. It dates back to the reign of the Greek king Ptolemy Philadelphus 282 BC , on the ruins of the ancient Egyptian temples . After the construction of the Aswan low dam in 1902 , The island was nearly always flooded and submerged & for nearly 68 years till 1960 the complex was not underwater only when the dam’s sluices were open from July to October.
In 1960 , a large coffer dam of steel plates was built with 1 million cubic metres of sand was tipped. Any water that seeped through was pumped away. Next the monuments were measured  by using Photogrammetry. Thousands of pieces were dismantled  and then transported to the nearby island of Agilkia, situated on higher ground some 500 metres .
