They are
possibly the oldest known religious texts in the world. The oldest dated to
2400 BC . Those Amazing inscriptions are carved on the walls of the pyramids at
Saqqara. They are 759 spells in total. The collection forms the basis of much
of the later religious theology and literature of Ancient Egypt.
No single
pyramid contained the whole collection of spells. Those were utterances and meant to be spoken or chanted by priests during the performance of the royal mortuary
rituals. Those spells were designed to free the soul of the dead pharaoh from
the body and help it ascend towards the heavens.
They were
intended to help the soul of the pharaoh in his transition from earthly life to
the afterlife (known as the Field of Reeds similar to the Elysian fields of
Heaven) where he would live eternally. The Field of Reeds was a mirror image of
one’s life on earth but without sickness, weakness, sadness, worries, troubles and
of course death.
They aim at
one great goal which is the resurrection of the pharaoh safely and his
ascension to t
he Afterworld. They were 1st discovered in 1881 by Gaston
Maspero.
