Winged scarab beetle holding a sun disc over the head

Dung beetles roll dung into a ball as food and as a brood chamber in which to lay eggs . This way the eggs hatch , larvae find food & appear from nowhere , making it a symbol of spontaneous creation , rebirth resurrection and transformation. Laying its eggs in bodies of dead animals was a symbol of life being created from dead matter. It came to represent the soul rising from death. The rising sun god was depicted as a scarab beetle. He renewed the sun every day before rolling it above the horizon, then carried it through the other world after sunset, only to renew it again the next day. Rolling the dung balls resemble the rolling or progression of the sun across the sky from east to west .Thus the young sun was thought to be reborn in the form of a winged scarab beetle every morn at sunrise , as he rose in the sky , he brought light and life to the land.
